1. Determine if you are an independent or dependent student.
You are only an independent student if at least one of the following is true about you:
If none of the above apply, you are a dependent student.
(If special circumstances prevent you from providing parental information, please visit your GO Center advisor so we may contact your college/university.)
2. All students need to collect the following information
3. If you are a dependent student, you will need this info from your parents.
(If your parents are divorced/separated, include info about the parent who provides the majority of your financial support. If that parent is remarried, you must include your stepparent.)
- Dependent Student (Most Common): report information about yourself and your parent(s)
- Independent Student: only report information about yourself and not your parent(s)
You are only an independent student if at least one of the following is true about you:
- You have a child or other dependent AND you provide the majority of the financial support
- if a parent provides financial support for you and your child, you would be considered a dependent
- You have a court-ordered legal guardian who is not your biological or adoptive parent
- You were in foster care at any point past the age of 13
- You were a ward of the court at any point after age 13
- You are married
- You are homeless or at risk of being homeless
- Both of your parents are incarcerated and/or deceased
If none of the above apply, you are a dependent student.

2. All students need to collect the following information
- Student FSA ID (username and password). You may create your FSA ID HERE
- Picture or copy of your social security card (if applicable)
- If you have a green card, you will need a picture or copy
- Your 2022 federal tax forms (if applicable)
- The total current amount in your checking and savings accounts
- The list of colleges/universities you're applying to or have been accepted into
3. If you are a dependent student, you will need this info from your parents.
(If your parents are divorced/separated, include info about the parent who provides the majority of your financial support. If that parent is remarried, you must include your stepparent.)
- Parent FSA ID for one or both parents . They can create their FSA ID HERE
- Their social security number(s) (if applicable)
- Parents without a social security number can now create an FSA ID! They will need to answer other identifier questions.
- 2022 Federal Tax Forms (1040 and all schedules)
- Total in checking/savings accounts
- Net worth of stocks, bonds, etc.
- Net worth of parent-owned business(es) or farm(s)
- Amount of child support received in the past year for all children
- Federal benefits (SNAP, WIC, TANF, etc.) received in 2022/2023
